REx-PN Overview & Study Guide
The Regulatory Exam – Practical Nurse (REx-PN) is the entry-to-practice exam for applicants seeking to become a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) in Ontario or a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in British Columbia. It is designed to assess your entry-level competence to provide safe, effective nursing care.
Exam Format & Logistics
- Format: Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT). The difficulty of questions adjusts based on your performance.
- Question Count: 90 to 150 multiple-choice questions.
- Time Limit: Up to 4 hours (includes breaks).
- Scoring: The exam determines if you possess the minimum ability required for safe practice. It is pass/fail.
- Testing Center: Administered at Pearson Professional Centers; involves biometric identification (palm vein scan, photo, signature).

Strategic Study Plan
1. Master the Test Blueprint
Download the official REx-PN Test Plan from the CNO or BCCNM website. Treat it as your primary syllabus. Highlight competencies you find challenging and focus your initial efforts there.
2. Prioritize Application Over Memorization
The REx-PN rarely asks for definitions. It asks, “What would you do next?” or “Which patient is most at risk?”
- Scenario-based practice: When reviewing, don’t just ask “what is this?” but “how does this affect my clinical decision-making?”
- Prioritization: Practice NCLEX-style questions that require you to identify the most urgent intervention or the most unstable patient.
3. Utilize High-Quality Question Banks
- Mirror the Format: Use sources that provide Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT) simulations.
- Analyze Rationales: The most important part of a practice question is the rationale. If you get a question wrong, understand why the correct answer is the safest choice and why your choice was incorrect.
- Exam Conditions: Take full-length practice exams without notes, distractions, or extended breaks to build your stamina for the 4-hour window.
4. Exam Day Preparedness
- Review Candidate Rules: Familiarize yourself with the Candidate Bulletin to understand security protocols, allowed items, and check-in procedures.
- Mental Hygiene: Incorporate stress management (e.g., deep breathing, exercise) into your study routine to avoid burnout.
- Lab Values: You will be provided with specific reference values (e.g., ABGs, electrolytes, hematocrit) on the screen. Focus on interpreting what those numbers mean for your patient rather than brute-force memorization.
Note: If you are unsuccessful, you will receive a Candidate’s Performance Report (CPR). Use this diagnostic feedback to target specific content deficiencies before your next attempt.
